Six things to do before your first video consultation

A good online consultation is mostly decided before it starts. Six small preparations that give the doctor what they need and get you a better answer.

Doctors consistently say the same thing about online consultations: the appointments that go well are the prepared ones. None of this takes long.

1. Write down your symptoms and their timeline

When did it start? Is it getting better, worse, or staying the same? What makes it worse? Under the pressure of a timed call, people reliably forget the detail that mattered. Two lines on paper solve it.

2. Gather your medicines — the actual boxes

Not a remembered name, the box. Strength and dosage matter, and brand names for the same drug differ. Have everything you currently take within reach, including supplements and anything bought over the counter.

3. Upload your reports beforehand

If you have recent test results, upload them under My Test Reports and share them with the doctor you are seeing. A doctor reading your results before the call starts is worth several minutes of describing them badly during it.

4. Sort out the room, not just the connection

Sit somewhere quiet with light on your face rather than behind you — a window at your back turns you into a silhouette, and skin, eyes and throat cannot be assessed in shadow. Use headphones if you have them: they improve what the doctor hears from you far more than they improve what you hear.

5. Test the link a few minutes early

Open your appointment and check the meeting link before the scheduled time, not at it. Allow a moment for your browser to ask for camera and microphone permission. If your connection is weak, being close to the router beats every other fix.

6. Decide what you most need answered

If you could leave the consultation with one question resolved, what would it be? Ask it early. Everything else can follow, and you will not run out of time before the thing that worried you enough to book.

After the call

Your prescription arrives digitally, with an access code so you can retrieve it from anywhere. Read the dosage instructions before you get to the pharmacy — if anything is unclear, that is what the notification link and a short follow-up are for. And once you are better, leave a rating: the star ratings on this platform come only from patients who actually completed a consultation, which is what makes them worth reading.
